Therapeutic Springs
The Vals thermal and mineral springs originate on the left side of the valley, 20 to 25 meters above the valley floor on the
hotel and spa grounds. Drilled in 1980, the most important well is located south of the Hotel Therme and protected by a
modern structure. The mineral spring water is used by both the Hotel und Thermalbad Bad Vals AG and the Valser Mineralquellen AG. The springs are owned by the community of Vals.

Temperature and Mineralization
For millions of years water has collected in five billion tons of Bündner schist, it has seeped through cracks and crevices
down to a depth of 1,000 meters and penetrated the dolomite rock layer, from whence it finally resurfaces at the foot of Piz Aul.

The water tapped by the new borehole drilled in 1980 emerges at a temperature of 30° C. These thermal springs in Vals are the only ones in Grisons and are fed by a watercourse 90 meters below ground. This source runs through Trias strata, a regional phenomenon that can be observed in the Vals Valley and Lugnez.

An analysis of the chemical composition of the water clearly shows that mineralization occurs in the Trias strata because
all the dissolved particles found in the thermal water are also present in the various rocks of the Trias strata: dolomite,
lime stone, white marble with quartz and cellular dolomite, and in between, gray slate. The concentration of the
mineralization of the water is 1,918 milligrams| liter and can be broken down as follows: calcium 436, magnesium 54,
sodium 10.7, chloride 2.5, fluoride 0.63, iron 6, iodide 0.02, potassium 2.0, manganese 0.03, hydrogen carbonate 386, sulfate 990, silicic acid 25.
